If you use a home or work broadband connection, then the settings will need to be changed back to send email using that connection - so make a note of the settings before you make any changes.
SMTP Server Settings (for Outbound / Sending Email)

Vodafone 3G SMTP Servers

smtp.vodafone.net
send.vodafone.net
smtp.vizzavi.co.uk

Three 3G SMTP Servers

smtp-mbb.three.co.uk
smtp.three.co.uk

T-Mobile 3G SMTP Servers

smtp.t-email.co.uk - May need to use SMTP Auth and tick "Use In mail settings"

Orange 3G SMTP Servers

smtp.orange.net
smtp.orange.co.uk

O2 SMTP Servers

smtp.o2.co.uk - GPRS and 3G

Virgin SMTP Servers

mail.virgin.net
smtp.virgin.net

Error “Invalid Update Control CTF File” When Updating AVG Anti-Virus 8.0

You need to rename/remove the CTF temp files in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download…. Dont delete all the .bin files in there unless you want to re-run all updates since your original installation (reinstallation seems to cause a problem in IEs Link Scanner which causes IE to Crash). Only rename/remove the avginfo files that end with .ctf.

There were two .CTF files (avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf) in that folder, and deleting them fixed the problem indeed.

Note: The Application Data folder is hidden by default. You need to enable Windows Explorer to show hidden files in order to view the Application Data folder. Alternately, type the above folder path in the Start, Run dialog and press {ENTER} to launch the folder.
Windows Vista users: Delete the .CTF files from the following folder:
C:\ProgramData\avg8\update\download
Script to automate the task

I’ve scripted the above so that it can help if you want to run the task in multiple PCs. Download del_avg_ctf.zip and save to Desktop. Unzip the file and run the script del_avg_ctf.vbs. The AVG Update .CTF files should be deleted automatically. The script runs fine in Windows XP and Windows Vista systems.

Webdav Write Access in Vista

Although, it is not the most elegant solution (the best solution beinga Microsoft fix for this issue). If you run Excel, or any Office application in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode, you will be granted"Write Access" to the file on your webdav. You can do this by accessing the application in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12.

1.) Right Click on the Application (ie. excel.exe)
2.) Click "Properties"
3.) Click the "Compatibility" Tab
4.) (if you're an administrator) click "show settings for all users"button
5.) Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and selectWindows XP (Service Pack 2)6.) Apply the changes. Now you should be able to open your file on the webdav server withwrite access.

How to turn off the fancy Windows Vista Aero interface

Windows Vista has a fancy new Aero interface that makes the windows look like glass and provides very cool 3D effects. Performance tests have shown that Aero won’t slow your computer down. However, you might want to disable Aero if you prefer a simpler user interface or if you need to take screenshots.
To disable Windows Aero and return to a simpler time, follow the steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Appearance and Personalization.
3. This directory needs to be within the user's space, such as under Documents, in order to prevent possible UAC permissions problems.

Copy all the .dbx files from one Outlook Express Identity into this directory, ensuring that folders.dbx is included.

You need to check that you have write access to the files, doesn't make sense I know but that's MS programmers for you: Go to Edit Select all in Windows Explorer and select all the dbx files. Then right click on the selection and choose Properties and ensure that the read only attribute of the files is unchecked.

In Windows Mail go to File Import Messages and choose Outlook Express 6 format and choose to import from a directory.

Then use the Browse button to browse to the directory of dbx files. Make sure that when you set the directory that what is listed in the path is correct (NOTE: Vista can put the wrong path in here sometimes, so instead of c:\mypath it puts c:\mypath\mypath, so check the path to verify that it is correct, and if it is not correct then fix it by clicking the Browse button a second time and then leave the selection blank and clicking Okay.).

Then select the files from which you wish to import messages and click Import, by default it will import all folders, which in this case included some 9,000 deleted items!

Convert iTunes files to MP3

Want to play your unprotected iTunes music on another device that doesn't support the iTunes file format?

This guy details using iTunes to convert your files into mp3 files without downloading additional applications: Blog article by myrightbrai

Instant Repair

Got internet access but you have PC problems?
